Job description
About the Role
The Analytics and Business Intelligence Manager joins the Strategy and Transformation team, reporting to the Senior Strategic Insights Manager, at a time when the RFU is working to deliver its new strategy, Plan 2030: More than a game. The role exists to put data-driven decisions at the centre of the organisation and to help build a deeper understanding of players, volunteers and fans. Combining expert analysis, thoughtful visualisation and compelling storytelling, the postholder leads data and insights projects from start to finish, working closely with colleagues across the RFU and with external partners including volunteers, commercial partners and agencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build and own a suite of intuitive Tableau dashboards and self-serve tools that answer real business questions rather than simply reporting numbers.
- Continuously evaluate and improve existing dashboards using feedback and usage data, and build data literacy across the business so colleagues can confidently explore dashboards for themselves.
- Start with the business question, working with stakeholders to understand the decision, opportunity or problem to be addressed, and analyse complex datasets on players, volunteers, fans and the wider game to identify trends, patterns and correlations.
- Translate findings into clear, actionable recommendations and turn complex findings into compelling stories, tailored to different audiences through executive one-pagers, board papers, presentations and dashboards.
- Bring together multiple sources of research, insights and analytics to build rounded, evidence-based narratives, and support senior leaders to make data-driven decisions aligned with business goals.
- Lead and manage data and insights projects end to end, shaping and challenging requirements at the outset and managing the expectations of executives, technical teams and non-technical colleagues as a trusted partner to the business.
- Ensure the accuracy, consistency and reliability of data across systems, and establish and embed data governance frameworks and policies, maintaining compliance with data privacy regulations such as GDPR and CCPA.
- Shape and drive the data and insights function by owning the long-term workplan for data projects, organising resource, managing data suppliers, and collaborating with other RFU departments so that data is sourced, stored and used according to best practice.
- Stay up to date with trends and best practice in data analytics, visualisation and database technologies, adopting new tools, technologies and methodologies as they emerge.
- Examine RFU data for opportunities and risks to business performance, providing insight rather than information and enabling the business to prioritise using consistent reporting frameworks
- While contributing to the wider data community and to an inclusive culture through the organisation's core values.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- SQL proficiency, including the ability to write complex queries, optimise performance and work with various relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle.
- Proven dashboard development expertise in Tableau (or a similar BI tool), with examples of turning data into clear, compelling stories.
- Understanding of statistical methods and their application to business problems.
- Practical experience of managing, processing, analysing and reporting on both business and consumer data.
- Practical experience of translating data into relevant information and meaningful insight, and communicating findings to a non-analytical audience.
- Ability to demonstrate examples of how analysis, visualisation and storytelling have been used to influence a decision, change an approach or improve an outcome.
- Experience of developing close working relationships across multi-function teams, influencing and managing upwards to drive results.
- Experience as a project manager able to run projects independently from start to finish.
- Brilliant collaboration skills, able to get the most out of diverse internal and external stakeholders to deliver excellent work.
- Outstanding communication skills, excelling in presentations as well as in day-to-day work.
- Impactful data storytelling, bringing insight to life through well-designed dashboards and reports for audiences with less experience of data and insights.
- Ability to anticipate opportunities and challenges and suggest a path through them.
- Commitment to maintaining an appropriate standard of confidentiality.
Preferred Skills
- Python or R for analysis and automation.
- Tableau certification, such as Tableau Desktop Specialist or Certified Data Analyst.
- Understanding of UX and visual design principles as applied to dashboards and reports.

- Interest in learning to work with big databases within a data-intensive organisation or environment.
- Some understanding of the local sporting landscape and sport development.
- Experience with research platforms such as Alchemer or Recollective.
- Experience in Smartsheet, automating forms and reporting.
