Job description
About the Role
Is accountable for driving the US Quality & Food Safety strategic plan across a complex international manufacturing base spanning the US and Canada. It protects the brand and customers while enabling the company to scale safely across the region. The postholder leads the US QFS function and manages a team of three direct reports: two US Technical Managers and an Ingredient Quality Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the US Quality & Food Safety (QFS) function, taking overall accountability for food safety and quality across all Huel products and sites, including raw materials and co-manufacturing across RTD, Powders, Hot & Savoury and other categories.
- Lead, coach and develop a high-performing US team of three direct reports (two US Technical Managers and an Ingredient Quality Manager), providing clear direction, building capability and ensuring strong ownership across the team.
- Define and drive the US QFS strategy, delivering 'right first time' products and an outstanding consumer experience, setting CPMU reduction targets and driving continuous improvement across all sites.
- Ensure compliance with US food safety regulations and standards (SQF, FSSC 22000, BRCGS, FDA, FSMA and cGMPs), owning and continually improving Food Safety & Quality Management Systems (HACCP, VACCP, TACCP and GFSI standards).
- Lead regulatory and food safety risk assessments for contaminants, including heavy metals, pesticide residues and other chemical hazards, translating US regulatory requirements into effective risk-management and compliance actions.
- Oversee US raw material suppliers and co-manufacturers, ensuring ingredients and products are safe, compliant and consistently meet Huel's standards, while working with HQ to establish robust material onboarding processes and a resilient supply network.
- Take ownership of the end-to-end testing agenda for ingredients and finished products, ensuring timely analysis, monitoring trends and driving investigations and corrective actions where needed.
- Act as the key escalation point for US food safety incidents and quality crises, leading decisive responses, clear stakeholder communication and escalation to the Technical Director and SLT when required.
- Work closely with Product Supply and co-manufacturing partners to strengthen manufacturing controls, ensure consistency and deliver safe, high-quality products across the US.
- Champion continuous improvement and regulatory compliance across US operations, maintaining accreditations, supporting FDA, FSMA, state-level, packaging, labelling and market registration requirements, and embedding food safety awareness across the business.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- A proven QFS leader with 10+ years' experience in the food industry (FMCG, manufacturing or retail), with deep knowledge of Food Safety & Quality systems across the US.
- Experience building, developing and inspiring multi-disciplinary technical teams, providing clear direction and structure while empowering autonomy across three direct report functions.
- Strong technical knowledge of US food law, ingredients, nutrition and manufacturing processes, including FDA requirements for foods and dietary supplements, with the curiosity and foresight to identify emerging regulatory risks and opportunities and translate them into actionable guidance.
- Hands-on experience working with products similar to Huel's range, including powders and dry ingredient mixes, RTD/aseptic bottling, canning and Hot & Savoury, within a US manufacturing environment.
- Confident communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across NPD, Supply Chain, Logistics, Procurement and Commercial/Marketing teams, and to represent the company credibly with regulators, accreditation bodies and co-manufacturing partners.
- A strong understanding of allergen controls, including the US 'Big 9' allergen labelling requirements, testing methodologies and limits.
- Experience working with third-party accreditation bodies to maintain high standards.
- A degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Food Technology or a related discipline.
- A fast-paced, high-performance mindset, comfort with thinking differently and pushing boundaries, and a belief that big goals are achieved through creativity and teamwork.
