Job description
About the Role
Is responsible for designing, prototyping, implementing and maintaining interactive gameplay systems, technical content and the platform that supports them, ensuring feasibility, integration quality and performance. It acts as a technical key contributor within the Tech Design team and serves as a go-to owner for complex Tech Design segments. At the Advanced level, the role influences feasibility, scope and Blueprint patterns with Design and Production, and mentors and unblocks the team on content integration and performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and maintain technical configurations for game features (engine, editor, proprietary WB tools) and evolve editor workflows (placement, data layers, preview, debug, validation, naming conventions).
- Design, develop, maintain and debug high-performance, maintainable interactive gameplay systems and content (definitions, conditions, gameplay tags, volumes, scripted sequences, animation integration) suited to console/PC constraints and large-scale content integration.
- Prototype, integrate and iterate to validate feasibility, scope and quality; implement and preserve design integrity through design revisions across development.
- Support scripted content with Level Design and validate integration of gameplay systems (encounters, interactions, progression, camera, cinematics) within content scenarios.
- Collaborate with Level Design, Game Design, Art, VFX, Programming and QA: gather requirements, document setups, integrate revisions and resolve gameplay, content integration and performance issues.
- Identify dependencies across teams, systems and assets; align Production and disciplines; adjust level of polish based on phase and quality targets; leverage QA and playtest feedback.
- Participate in technical reviews, champion technical excellence and gameplay milestone technical validation where relevant; mentor on gameplay practices and produce technical documentation (TDDs, architecture notes, content integration guides).
- Maintain technology watch on technical and gameplay practices; promote good practices and contribute to continuous improvement of high-performance, cutting-edge software.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- At least 8 years of technical design experience in the video game industry.
- Contributed to at least two AAA titles, including one shipped console/PC release.
- Experience in large-scale development for consoles and PC across the full cycle (prototyping, production, delivery), including post-launch (DLC, title updates).
- Optimisation and debugging skills on PC and consoles; ability to analyse performance and recommend improvements (Blueprint reviews, profiling, World Partition, budgets, streaming).
- Strong Unreal Engine 5 proficiency for technical gameplay: advanced Blueprint, gameplay tags, data layers, animation integration; State Trees, Ability System, game-AI configuration, spawn systems and gameplay conditions; EQS, interaction systems, gameplay cameras and cinematics/gameplay integration.
- Knowledge of development tools (Perforce, JIRA and bug tracking tools).
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and transparently, in writing and verbally, with design and programming teams.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills; results-oriented.
- Self-motivated team player with a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
- Ability to prioritise work with Production, calibrate deliverable quality to phase and milestone context, and self-manage execution against agreed goals and plans.
- Ability to drive ambiguous technical topics forward in collaboration with Design and Production; initiative and professional rigour.
- Ability to guide less experienced team members and collaborate with internal and external resources.
- Passion for video games is essential to the role.
Preferred Skills
- Open-world, action-adventure, narrative or other significant relevant experience is strongly valued.
- Familiarity with a 3D DCC such as Maya or 3ds Max is considered a major asset.
- Ability to read C++ or programming/scripting experience is considered a strong asset.
