Job description
About the Role
This role leads the Technical Design team while remaining directly involved in production. It is responsible for growing the team, ensuring the technical quality of its deliverables, and personally taking on complex implementations on cross-functional mandates defined with leadership. At the lead level, the role owns the team's technical standards, bridges Design, Programming and Production, and leads by example by implementing complex technical segments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, prototype and implement complex gameplay systems and content on mandates defined with leadership, including gameplay systems, editor tools and workflows, content integration, and performance.
- Drive technical decisions and deliver robust, maintainable and performant solutions suited to console and PC constraints.
- Estimate, assess feasibility and flag risks early; when blockers arise, define alternative or temporary solutions with Production that preserve design intent.
- Document solutions through technical design documents, content integration guides, and best practices.
- Own the team's technical standards, including Blueprint patterns, content integration, and performance, and ensure they are applied.
- Review the team's implementations and ensure the quality, maintainability and performance of its deliverables.
- Unblock the team on technical issues, direct team members to the right points of contact, and represent Technical Design challenges to Design, Programming, Art, QA and Production.
- Maintain a high-level view of the team's mandates, keep leadership informed of progress and risks, run team meetings and 1:1s, and foster a climate of trust and collaboration.
- Relay studio and production information, support the team through shifts in priorities or direction, set each team member's goals, run performance reviews, and support career development, including promotion proposals.
- Take part in recruiting and onboarding new team members, and handle the team's day-to-day management.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- At least 8 years of technical design experience in the video game industry, including at least 1 year as a lead or team manager.
- Experience contributing to at least two AAA titles, including at least one shipped on console and PC, with experience in open-world, action-adventure or narrative games, or in post-launch content (title updates, DLC).
- People management experience: feedback, performance reviews, career development and recruitment.
- Proficiency in Unreal Engine 5 for technical gameplay: advanced Blueprints, gameplay tags, data layers, State Trees, Gameplay Ability System, game-AI configuration and EQS, interaction systems, gameplay cameras and cinematics integration
- Or equivalent experience on an AAA engine, with the ability to ramp up quickly.
- Scripting experience beyond Blueprints (e.g., Python for editor tools).
- Expertise in optimisation and debugging on PC and consoles (Blueprint reviews, profiling, World Partition, budgets, streaming).
- Familiarity with a 3D DCC (Maya or 3ds Max) and production tools (Perforce, Jira, bug tracking).
- Proven ability to plan and prioritise a team's work with Production while personally delivering production content.
- Clear, structured written and verbal communication skills with technical and non-technical partners.
- Passion for video games.
Preferred Skills
- Ability to read C++ is a strong asset.
