Job description
About the Role
The Senior Systems Engineer produces a wide range of bespoke solutions to support the timing, televising and organisation of Formula 1 events. The role sits within the Technical division and involves taking technical ownership of complex electronic hardware solutions across their full lifecycle, from requirements and architecture through to deployment. The engineer works closely with embedded software, mechanical, systems and other engineering disciplines, and provides technical direction to PCB fabrication, assembly and external engineering suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
- Take technical ownership of complex electronic hardware solutions from requirements and architecture through design, verification, manufacture, integration and deployment.
- Lead electronics design activity on assigned projects, translating system needs into robust hardware requirements and solutions that meet performance, reliability, safety and operational needs.
- Make and justify key technical decisions and design trade-offs, considering performance, reliability, manufacturability, testability, lifecycle, component availability and technical risk.
- Design and review analogue, digital, power and mixed-signal circuitry, including schematic capture and PCB layout, with appropriate EMC, signal-integrity and power-integrity consideration.
- Provide technical leadership through design and peer reviews, ensuring engineering decisions are appropriately analysed, challenged, documented and verified.
- Lead board bring-up, debugging, verification and system integration, collaborating with embedded software, mechanical, systems and other engineering disciplines to resolve complex issues.
- Own the verification approach for assigned hardware, defining test strategies, plans, procedures and acceptance criteria, and ensuring objective evidence demonstrates requirements compliance.
- Identify, assess and communicate technical risks, providing clear recommendations and escalating significant issues to project and engineering stakeholders where appropriate.
- Provide technical direction to PCB fabrication, assembly and external engineering suppliers, resolving manufacturing, quality and production issues.
- Mentor engineers and technicians, lead root-cause investigations, produce high-quality engineering documentation, and drive continuous improvement of electronics standards, tools and practices.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to quickly identify and resolve complex technical issues.
- Ability to operate effectively in a high-pressured and challenging environment while maintaining a methodical and structured approach to work.
- Highly motivated and flexible to change, able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality, performance and reliability.
- Educated to degree level in electronics engineering (or suitable equivalent).
- Strong background in the engineering domain, including electronics, schematic and PCB design.
- Five years' proven experience in electronics hardware design and development, with a focus on high-performance, high-reliability systems from requirements through to testing.
- Experience debugging and supporting hardware during system integration.
- Strong knowledge of electronics design principles, including analogue and digital circuit design, power electronics, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and signal integrity.
- Familiarity with design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for testability (DFT) techniques.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Good planning skills, including the ability to prioritise and multi-task effectively.
- Ability to write comprehensive technical design documentation for internal and external use.
Preferred Skills
- Experience of working in the broadcast or automotive (motorsport) industries.
