Job description
About the Role
Will build a centralised knowledge platform for NBA partner organisations: a single role-aware entry point consolidating reporting, a strategy library, and operational applications into one product. It focuses on creating systems that all NBA teams can use to drive revenue, efficiencies, and fandom. The engineer will own features end to end across interface, API, and data, working in Python and modern JavaScript or TypeScript, Microsoft Azure, and AI semantic layers on the Azure AI platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and ship features end to end, including Nuxt-based interfaces, Python backend services deployed as Azure services, REST APIs, and the data models beneath them.
- Build search, tagging, and content discovery, including role-aware views that show each organisation only what it should see.
- Write and optimise SQL across the data ecosystem and build connectors and migration pipelines that move an enterprise document library into a structured, tagged repository at volume.
- Build an AI semantic layer on the Azure AI platform, including retrieval-augmented search and natural-language querying using Azure AI Search and Azure OpenAI models.
- Design the ingestion path that makes content retrievable, covering chunking, embedding, security trimming, and index maintenance.
- Drive enablement of business skills, advanced analytics modelling, and fan activation tools within team business platforms.
- Share ownership of Azure environments, CI/CD, monitoring, and enterprise identity integration with the engineering team.
- Work to engineering team standards, including Git and code review, automated testing, and containerised local development, and document features, data flows, and inherited configuration as work progresses.
- Partner with product management and communicate clearly with non-technical colleagues across marketing, business operations, and analytics.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated experience shipping production web applications as part of an engineering team, including both user-facing interfaces and the services behind them.
- Demonstrated experience building and running applications on Microsoft Azure, including at least one production workload using Azure AI services.
- Hands-on experience with the Azure AI platform — Azure OpenAI Service, Azure AI Search, and Azure AI Foundry — used to build a retrieval-augmented or natural-language application that real users depend on; depth in this area is a primary requirement of the role.
- Working command of the surrounding Azure stack: compute, storage, managed databases, secrets, and Microsoft Entra ID as a consumer of it.
- Proficiency in Python and strong skills in TypeScript with a modern frontend framework.
- REST API design and strong SQL against relational databases and cloud data platforms.
- Practical understanding of AI application patterns, including RAG, embeddings and vector search, semantic layers, tool calling, evaluation, and grounding.
- Strong Git and collaborative development practice, including CI/CD and written documentation.
- Ability to work in an unfamiliar codebase and cloud environment: read it, extend it safely, and document findings.
- Comfort in an early-stage, start-up-style team, owning work independently and shaping process where none exists yet.
Preferred Skills
- Experience at a start-up, or on a founding or early-stage product team.
- Azure certification — Azure AI Engineer Associate, Azure Developer Associate, or equivalent.
- Experience building a centralised knowledge platform, internal data portal, or enterprise search product, including permission-aware retrieval.
- Experience with semantic or metric layers over a data warehouse.
- Experience with Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, SharePoint and Microsoft Graph, or embedding BI content such as Tableau or Power BI with row- and role-level security.
- Interest in or experience with sports business — ticketing, partnerships, marketing, or analytics.
Workplace
- The NBA currently provides eligible employees the option of working remotely one day per week.
Benefits & Perks
- Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in company-sponsored employee benefit programs including medical, short-term disability, mental health coaching/therapy, and sick time.
- Not all positions are eligible for these benefits; eligibility may vary by role.
