Job description
About the Role
The Portfolio Lead is accountable for delivery performance across a sub-domain of 4-6 pods covering Engineering, Quality and Product. The role leads the flow of value from idea to production, ensuring pods deliver with pace, predictability and understanding of outcomes. It combines hands-on delivery leadership with AI-augmented ways of working and data-driven decision-making, adapting approaches to each pod's context rather than prescribing a single framework.
Key Responsibilities
- Own delivery performance across a sub-domain of 4-6 pods and lead the flow of value from idea to production with pace, predictability and understanding of outcomes.
- Lead and communicate delivery health, risks and performance to leadership, and ensure cross-pod agreement on priorities, dependencies and shared goals.
- Ensure pods operate as self-organising units delivering value outcomes, and support pod leads through coaching, facilitation, conflict resolution and knowledge sharing.
- Deploy root cause analysis, systems thinking and structured techniques to analyse and resolve cross-pod blockers and systemic impediments, identifying patterns that indicate deeper organisational or process issues.
- Champion AI agent adoption across pods, including coding agents, test generation, story creation, board health and deployment automation
- Apply AI to reduce toil, accelerate delivery, improve decision-making, workflow insights, risk prediction and reporting automation
- And track the impact on delivery performance.
- Monitor and improve delivery flow using Kanban and lean principles, including lead time, cycle time, WIP and throughput
- Ensure WIP limits are respected and surface ageing items through Board Walks
- Identify bottlenecks, ageing work and sources of delay
- And support teams in breaking work into deliverable, value-driven increments.
- Support and evolve the agile operating model for a pod-based environment focused on pace, adapting Kanban, flow-based and lean approaches while ensuring consistency of practice without being prescriptive.
- Promote outcome-driven delivery over output-driven activity and guide teams to operate with autonomy and accountability.
- Define and maintain delivery metrics such as cycle time, flow efficiency, lead time of initiative, PDLC compression, dependency reduction, rework rate, team satisfaction and AI effectiveness.
- Build dashboards such as cumulative flow diagrams, throughput charts and WIP ageing for leadership visibility and informed decision-making; analyse performance data to identify trends and patterns; and use data to facilitate conversations and coach pods.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- 7+ years in delivery or agile roles, with at least 3 years operating across multiple teams simultaneously in a technology environment.
- Expert in flow-based delivery approaches such as Kanban, lean and continuous delivery, not limited to Scrum.
- Experience enabling multiple teams or pods simultaneously at scale.
- Strong understanding of AI tooling and its application to software delivery, including coding assistants, automation and intelligent analytics.
- Experienced in capacity planning, demand forecasting and resource optimisation across multiple teams.
- Ability to use data to solve complex problems and to interpret and communicate complex data sets clearly.
- Previous experience of organisational transformation and change management.
- Good knowledge of Objectives and Key Results (OKR) strategy.
- Ability to embody the Maker Dimensions, selecting for capability rather than just competence, and to be versatile, curious and able to operate with autonomy in a high-trust environment.
- AI fluency: uses AI tooling, experiments and iterates with AI as a collaborator.
- Agency and accountability: owns outcomes, not just tasks, and directs itself.
- Systems thinking: sees patterns across pods and addresses causes, not symptoms.
- Stakeholder engagement: builds working relationships across pods and leadership.
- Improve performance: raises the bar through data and experimentation.
- Cross-functional versatility: comfortable operating beyond their primary discipline.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in a regulated industry such as gaming, fintech or a similar sector is desirable.
