Job description
About the Role
This role leads the team that runs Deltatre's data services: large-scale data processing, onboarding and offboarding of tenant data, and the content recommendations behind customers' products. As Senior Engineering Manager, Data Services, the postholder sets direction and reviews designs rather than writing code day to day, leading a distributed team across three regions that mixes permanent analysts and contract engineers. The position is the senior technical escalation point for customers on how their data is handled, sitting where engineering depth meets customer trust.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a mixed team of permanent analysts and contract engineers across three regions to predictable, high-quality delivery.
- Build strong asynchronous working practices across the distributed team.
- Set technical direction and run design review for the Java/AWS estate (S3, EMR, Kinesis).
- Own SLOs for data freshness and pipeline reliability, incident response, and cloud cost.
- Own the pipelines and services behind content recommendations, and how their quality is measured.
- Own a repeatable, auditable onboarding and offboarding process for tenant data, including verified deletion when a tenant leaves.
- Work with the Cyber Security team on controlled, audited access to tenant data, including cross-region access.
- Ensure compliance with GDPR and other privacy regulations.
- Partner with Product on the roadmap.
- Act as the technical escalation point for customers, working with account managers and solutions engineers.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- 10+ years in software or data engineering.
- 4-5 years leading engineering teams.
- Track record leading distributed teams across time zones, including contractors or a delivery partner.
- Deep Java/JVM experience, enough to review designs and challenge approaches.
- Deep AWS data services experience, enough to spot cost or reliability problems.
- Practical experience with data privacy and access control.
- Practical experience with regulatory compliance, including GDPR and other privacy regulations.
- Confidence explaining technical decisions to customers and senior stakeholders.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with recommendation systems.
- Experience with multi-tenant SaaS data platforms.
- Background in media, streaming, or sports technology.
Workplace
- Candidates must be based in Italy; remote working from outside the country is not supported due to local employment and tax legislation.
- Is offered on an Italian employment contract.
Salary
- Salary starts from €30,000 at entry level and rises to €90,000 for those with significant relevant experience; where a candidate lands depends on the experience and expertise they bring.
- Falls under CCNL Commercio | D.Lgs. 96/2026.
