Job description
About the Role
This role is a senior technical leadership position on the Sports Modeling & Innovation team, supporting a global data initiative to expand and improve auxiliary data that can be joined to customer bet data. The role sets technical direction for sourcing, ingesting, modelling, and serving new data assets, and designs, builds, and scales data models, pipelines, and architecture for business performance-impacting decisions by data scientists, analysts, and traders. The first year is hands-on and scrappy, covering real-time data ingestion, scrapers, and a medallion architecture, starting with NBA and NFL before an international soccer model.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and build pipelines for fast, often real-time, ingestion of auxiliary data into well-designed data stores such as SQL, Delta Lake, and medallion architecture, including standing up new sources from scratch.
- Build and maintain scrapers and validation pipelines that source new external data, flag bad or missing data, and evolve as new datasets and sports come online.
- Own the design and delivery of the medallion architecture and data transformation jobs for the global data project, setting standards for the codebase and troubleshooting complex issues across the stack.
- Establish scalable approaches to database management and automated data cleaning across large, messy, and heterogeneous datasets.
- Make decisions between memory and speed tradeoffs to optimise project needs, help reduce query execution times, and remove unnecessary or unused metrics.
- Partner with stakeholders to prioritise and deliver data products such as curated datasets, Tableau dashboards, and R Shiny apps built on top of the new auxiliary data.
- Mentor other analytics engineers, lead by example, and drive adoption of best practices, coding standards, and design patterns across the team.
- Influence technical strategy and roadmap for the global data project, making pragmatic build-versus-buy and architecture decisions in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Company to support operational flexibility and evolving business needs.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience working in an analytics or data engineering role, including senior or lead-level responsibilities.
- 4+ years of experience designing and maintaining databases and data ingestion pipelines.
- Deep understanding of relational databases.
- Proficiency in SQL, Databricks, R/Python, Tableau, AWS S3 buckets, and command line.
- Proven experience building production data pipelines with Python/R and Databricks, and hands-on experience designing medallion (bronze/silver/gold) or comparable layered architectures.
- Bachelor's degree or relevant experience in a data analysis role.
- Strong personal organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and elevating a team's technical best practices, standards, and ways of working.
- Comfort operating with ambiguity in a scrappy, early-stage build, making sound architecture and prioritisation decisions with incomplete information.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with real-time ingestion and web scraping.
- Bachelor's degree in a highly numerate major such as mathematics, statistics, or economics.
- Curiosity about AI and emerging technologies.
- Exposure to sports data, particularly NBA/NFL and especially international soccer.
- Passion for learning, a bias toward action, and a desire to shape how data is leveraged at scale.
Benefits & Perks
- Health plans to choose from, some as low as $0 per paycheck, including fertility and family planning programs, mental health support, and fitness benefits.
- Medical, vision, and dental insurance; life insurance; and disability insurance.
- Generous paid time off (PTO and sick leave), paid personal time off, 14 paid company holidays, and paid sick time in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.
- Annual bonus and long-term incentive opportunities based on performance, and eligibility for short-term or long-term incentive compensation including cash bonuses and stock program participation.
- 401k with up to a 5% match.
- Commuter benefits and pet insurance.
- Benefits differ across location, role, and level.
