Responsible to - Chair of The LTA Trust

Location - Trust meeting usually held at the National Tennis Centre, 100 Priory Lane, Roehampton, London SW15 5JQ

About The LTA Trust

The LTA Trust (the ‘Trust’) is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee, having no share capital. It was incorporated on 29 May 2012 and is bound by its Memorandum and Articles of Association. The Trust was registered by the Charity Commission (Charity Number 1148421) on 2 August 2012. The Trust's only member is the LTA Operations Limited ("the LTA"). The Trust is an independent charity with six trustees, four independent and two appointed by the LTA.

The aims of the Trust are to promote community participation by providing facilities for playing tennis, mini tennis or other tennis related activity in line with the LTA's strategic plan and facilities strategy. The LTA Trust plans to achieve this through grant support and investment in community accessible tennis facilities. The LTA Trust Charitable Objectives

The Trust's objectives, as approved by the Charity Commission are to advance for the public benefit such charitable purposes associated with the game of tennis in any part of Great Britain, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man that are consistent with the purposes of the LTA. The aims of the charity are to promote community participation by providing facilities for playing tennis, mini tennis or other tennis related activity in line with the LTA's strategic plan and facilities strategy.

About the role

The LTA Trust Board of Trustees are company directors and charity trustees. They are accountable for the proper use of the Trust’s charitable assets and are accountable for ensuring that the Trust meets its charitable objectives. We are seeking individuals with solid knowledge of the grassroots tennis landscape, specifically where sport has made a difference within communities, and for individuals who have experience of grant giving within this environment. Experience of working as part of a Board of Trustees and of charity governance is required.

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure the Trust carries out its charitable objects in a legal, honest and accountable way
  • Ensures the Trust applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its charitable purpose
  • Contribute actively to the Board of Trustees by giving firm strategic direction to the Trust, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets, and evaluating performance against agreed targets
  • Safeguard the good name, values and financial stability of the LTA Trust
  • Network on behalf of, and promote the purpose of, The LTA Trust

Person Specification

  • Strong experience of grant giving under a facility investment programme - Essential
  • Proven experience of charity governance and working with or as part of a Board of Trustees - Essential
  • Previous Trustee experience in a charity/volunteer led organisation -Desirable
  • Strong knowledge of Charity Tax, and experience with NCVO or The Charity Commission - Desirable
  • Excellent networking skills, influencing and communication skills - Essential
  • Balancing tact and diplomacy with a willingness to challenge and constructively criticise. - Essential


Knowledge, Training & Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the sporting landscape and the sport of tennis to be able to offer advice and guidance in this area - Essential
  • Good, independent judgement, political impartiality and the ability to think creatively in the context of the trust and external environment. - Essential
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship - Essential
  • A thorough understanding of the Charity Governance Code - Desirable
  • Knowledge of the Governance structure of sports governing bodies - Desirable


Additional information

Remuneration - The role of Trustee is voluntary and therefore not accompanied by financial remuneration, although reasonable expenses may be claimed.

Term of Office - The appointment will serve an initial three-year term and will be eligible for re-appointment for two additional terms.

Location - It is anticipated that Trustee meetings will take place at the National Tennis Centre, Roehampton. If necessary Trustees can occasionally attend meetings by telephone.

Time commitment - There will be a minimum of 4 Board of Trustee meetings per year plus some additional time on key projects as required
