The Football Association (The FA) is the governing body of football in England. We are responsible for promoting and developing the game at all levels; from grass roots through to the professional game, The FA Cup and the England International teams, and has two core assets: Wembley Stadium and St George's Park.

The Role

Manage The FA's relationship with Government and to enhance the reputation of The FA politically, building credibility and trust amongst all political stakeholders, combatting possible regulatory interference and seeking improved financial and other support from the public sector.

Key Accountabilities

Support the strategic Public Affairs approach of The FA

  • Work with the Senior Public Affairs Manager to devise and deliver The FA's annual Public Affairs strategy.
  • Maintain oversight of The FA's public affairs agency on a day-to-day basis, and work closely on tasks.
  • Lead the local engagement plan with MPs - to keep them abreast of The FA's work in their constituencies, to showcase initiatives, and to seek their involvement.

Maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders

  • Manage the FA's engagement - and build and maintain positive relationships - with key decision makers across Government, Government departments, Parliament, local government, political parties and wider stakeholders.
  • Keep The FA's political stakeholders up-to-date on the work of the organisation; seek their support for The FA's policy priorities; and involve them in The FA's events and engagements.

Influence public policy outcomes

  • Keep abreast of potential public policy changes, and update colleagues on developments.
  • Work with the Senior Public Affairs Manager to in influence public policy outcomes - preventing regulatory interference and seeking improved outcomes for football and sport.

Political intelligence and monitoring

  • Monitor political developments in Parliament, the news and on social media.
  • Manage the relationship with The FA's external monitoring provider.

Research, briefing and correspondence

  • Conduct research on salient public policy issues, and ahead of meetings and engagements with stakeholders.
  • Provide clear and informative briefings for meetings with stakeholders and other events.
  • Manage the correspondence with MPs and other stakeholders.

Events

  • Deliver events in parliament, with support from our external agency - such as roundtables, webinars, events, receptions and screenings.
  • Deliver Football Footprint visits with MPs in their constituencies.
  • Deliver Party Conference engagement and fringe events.

Ad hoc responsibilities

  • Support the Corporates Affairs function, delivering specific strategic projects for the organisation.
  • Executing additional tasks as required in order to meet The FA Group's changing priorities.

What we are looking for

Essential

  • Experience of working in politics and/or public affairs.
  • Experience of working with and access to decision makers within Parliament and Whitehall.
  • Keen interest in politics and excellent understanding of parliamentary procedures and the workings of government.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.

Desirable

  • Experience and/or understanding of the football industry.
  • Knowledgeable about football and The FA.
