MSc Strategic Sport Marketing

You will develop a sound theoretical and applied understanding of the subject area during your taught programme. The MSc Strategic Sport Marketing has been designed to enable you to work independently and collaboratively through a range of workshops, debates, reflective tasks and authentic assessments. Building on your industry expertise, this will ensure you are developing the core capabilities in a range of sport market contexts whilst developing valuable skills in communication, problem-solving and strategic decision making thus benefiting your work place opportunities.
Practical activities such as creating marketing communication plans, digital marketing campaigns, carrying out brand audits and consumer experience evaluations will enable you to develop your expertise and become a confident marketing practitioner.
Your modules will cover a wide range of topics such as strategic sport marketing, sponsorship, branding, consumer insight, media and digital marketing. You will drive the focus of your independent project by choosing to complete an in-depth written dissertation, a business plan, or a consultancy project that will see you work with an organisation in industry. This will enable you to develop your expertise in responding strategically to the changing global sport landscape.
Sport is a global business and is becoming more unpredictable due to dynamic changes in the global landscape, making it ever more challenging for marketing professionals to understand their markets and respond strategically to achieve their organisational and marketing objectives. This course combines specialised marketing skills with expert knowledge of the sport industry which will make your CV standout whether you are wanting to get into this profession or are looking to advance to the next stage in your marketing career.
Tutors with established links to major professional sports bodies will support you throughout your course and their research-informed experience will provide varied learning opportunities so you can gain a balanced perspective of the discipline. We work closely with local organisations such as Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire County Cricket Club, and we welcome industry speakers, such as representatives of the Rugby Football League and international marketing agencies, to bridge theory and practice.

The expert skills and knowledge you will develop on this course will prime you to work in a wide variety of roles across the industry, including for national sports organisations, global brands and marketing agencies. Opportunities will be open to you in areas such as digital and social media marketing, marketing and commercial roles of professional sports clubs, national and international governing bodies, charities and foundations. Alternatively, if you are already employed in the sports industry, you could seek promotion in your current position or look to work as a sports marketing consultant.
We also provide strategic support for those wishing to develop their own business ideas - this is also connected to the choice of independent projects which may support personal business plan ambitions.
