Reporting to the Communications and Media Manager, the Communications Officer is responsible for executing key components of the communications and media functions of the BWF.

This includes carrying out BWF communication activities related to the production of Fan Newsletters including the quarterly Shuttle World as well as wide-ranging coverage of BWF Major Events and HSBC BWF World Tour Events, plus ongoing BWF website news and feature story generation.

This person must also be fluent in Mandarin (written and spoken) and be available for translating interviews, assisting in the coordination of our Chinese-language social media platforms and producing and coordinating Chinese-language content for our BWF Fansite (China) 


The Communications Officer forms a crucial part of the Communications Department, reporting to the Communications and Media Manager and working alongside an energetic and creative team of writers, reporters, social media producers and designers.

Together with the Communications Department Staff, the Communications Officer is responsible for:

  1. Attending events and generating content for BWF’s communications platforms
  2. Acting as BWF’s primary Chinese-speaking media representative and writer for the Marketing and Communications Department
  3. Ensuring the multi-purpose use of content across various platforms – print, broadcast, online, social media
  4. Writing and posting news, announcements and other relevant content to all BWF websites 
  5. Monitoring news and developments related to Badminton and relevant international sports and events
  6. Curating a pool of talent stories through research, athlete networks and departmental coordination
  7. Contributing to the content generation of the weekly BWF magazine show in collaboration with the BWF broadcast partner production office and other relevant stakeholders
  8. Assisting with the creation of storytelling concepts for commercial, developmental and educational activations
  9. Working with the Communications and Media Manager and Social Media Producer to help align content strategies between our multi-lingual platforms
  10. Helping to coordinating BWF photo partners and the archive of images and video clips
  11. Supporting the communications function in any other way


Qualities / Attributes                 

The successful candidate will have experience in sports reporting and event coverage, and be fluent in Mandarin (written and spoken) and have a high level of English efficiency (written and spoken).

Being knowledgeable in badminton is also advantageous.

You will have an excellent understanding of the modern-day media ecosystem, and be an effective communicator with exceptional interpersonal skills.

Your ability to adapt to different roles and responsibilities, produce and publish a variety of traditional and digital content across multiple platforms and thrive in a team environment is essential.

Having worked in a multi-cultural environment will also be an advantage as will being fluent in other languages, on top of Mandarin and English.

A flexible attitude in working with a small team of personnel is essential.


Selection Criteria       

Candidates for the position will require a range of personal and professional skills to be considered for the role. The key criteria below will be used as a basis for short listing candidates for the interview phase.

a) Qualifications and Experience

  1. Relevant formal qualifications – a degree in media / communications;
  2. Experience as a reporter or journalist in sport and / or the media sector in China and around the world;
  3. A desire to be part of a new, dynamic media department capable of carrying out multiple functions;
  4. Experience in working in multi-cultural work environments.

b) Knowledge and Skills

  1. Excellent interpersonal skills and proven capacity to support the work of others;
  2. Excellent Chinese written and spoken language skills and superior presentation skills;
  3. Excellent English written and spoken language skills and superior presentation skills;
  4. Understanding of traditional, digital and social media platforms and various forms of communication techniques and content curation styles;
  5. Understanding of the sports industry and the role of an international federation / world body in the structure of an Olympic Games sport.


c) Personal Attributes

  1. You will have a positive outlook to employment and be a person that takes pride in the quality of work;
  2. Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.


Negotiated with the successful candidate dependant on qualifications and experience. 

An expected remuneration should be stated in the application.



A contract with a three-month probationary period will be offered to the successful candidate. Length of the contract to be discussed.   

Performance appraisals, against mutually agreed performance objectives will be a regular part of employment.


Hours of Work            

The position is contracted and full time. The nature of the work requires flexibility during busy periods.
