Legal Counsel – Football Regulation & Litigation

Our Organisation:

The FA is the governing body for football in England. We are responsible for overseeing, promoting and developing English football at all levels, from grassroots through to the professional game. This includes operating 24 England teams, the Emirates FA Cup, the Women’s Super League (WSL) and our two world-class venues, Wembley Stadium and St George’s Park. Overview of the role:

To provide proactive legal support to The FA Group across a full range of contentious, regulatory, and other non-commercial legal issues.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering robust legal advice in an efficient and effective manner across the full range of The FA Group’s contentious and non-commercial legal support requirements.
  • Protecting the organisation from litigation and reputational risk.
  • Providing support to the Head of Legal (Football Regulation & Litigation) on rule and regulation changes.
  • Providing legal and disciplinary support to the England national teams.
  • Advising on FIFA/UEFA regulatory matters.
  • Providing proactive legal support to the rest of the Legal & Governance Division.
  • Providing advice on player status matters to the Football Operations Division.
  • Taking the lead role on all contentious brand protection and IP litigation matters across The FA Group.
  • Dealing with insurance issues affecting The FA Group.
  • Providing support to the safeguarding team on legal issues.
  • Supporting the Head of Legal (Football Regulation & Litigation) with the allocation of work and running of the team, including the provision of guidance, support and training to other lawyers and the trainee within the Legal Team. 
  • Providing focused instructions to external law firms when authorised to do so.
  • Executing any additional tasks required in order to meet Legal Team and FA Group changing priorities.

    What we are looking for:

    Essential Skills:

  • At least 5 years working as a qualified solicitor however candidates with relevant skills sets regardless of post qualification experience may have the required technical skills.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a breadth of relevant contentious legal knowledge gathered in a major law firm and/ or corporate.
  • Ability to demonstrate clear and concise written and oral legal advice.
  • Ability to demonstrate the application of robust legal advice in a practical manner.
  • Excellent academic record.

    Desirable Skills:

  • Previous experience of sports litigation.
  • Experience of dealing with IP enforcement.
  • Experience of data protection law.
  • In house secondment experience.
