Job Description

Reporting to: 

Chief Medical Officer 
Chef de Mission 

Dates Active in Role: 

c.1st to 20th October 2018 (final dates TBC) 
All dates essential for preparation in the build up to deployment to the Youth Olympic Games (this may include 2/3 days for attendance at Team Leader Meetings and Team Planning Days).

Buenos Aires, Argentina (Games-time) & BOA Offices in London (Team Leader/Planning Meetings)

Hours of Work: 

Working hours will be as required to fulfil the role and its significant fluctuating demands throughout the Youth Olympic Games. 
The post holder will be required to acknowledge this and work in a flexible manner to accommodate all requests where appropriate. 

Special requirements:

Current DBS check. Full driving license. 

Relationships & Interfaces: 

Reports directly to Chef Medical Officer during the Youth Olympic Games. Works closely with HQ and NGB staff at Games, including all support staff & Team Leaders. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • To provide the highest quality medical support to all athletes for the duration of the Youth Olympic Games. (including preparation, Games-time and post-competition phases). 
  • To provide a responsive, accessible medical support service to all Team GB delegates, both in the Athlete Village, competition and training venues, and any other location deemed appropriate to meet the requirements of the job role. 
  • To ensure a high standard of health promotion & preventative care in liaison with the athletes’ support staff (CMO, CPO, Medical Officers, Physiotherapists, Team Leaders and others), including advice on the prevention of injury or illness. 
  • To liaise with other medical personnel, sports science staff and other support staff as required in order to ensure the highest standard of care of an athlete's injury or illness and optimum rehabilitation and management, whilst at all times working within the GMC guidelines on patient confidentiality. 
  • To promote drug-free sport and have a working knowledge of the WADA Code. 
  • To refer to appropriate specialists and other members of the medical support team as appropriate. 
  • To keep detailed medical records of all consultations and to keep these records confidential and secure. 
  • To provide reports on medical activity within the village or other locations as required. 

Personnel Specification

Essential Qualifications: 

1. Of good standing with GMC and on GP or SEM Register 
2. MSc (or equivalent) in Sports and Exercise Medicine 
3. Fellow or Member of the Faculty of SEM (FSEM) UK 
4. Current up-to-date Advanced Trauma & Life Support course (e.g. ICIS) 
5. Suitable professional indemnity cover (e.g.: MPS/MDU/MDDUS/Sempris) 
6. Current UKAD Accredited Advisor Certificate 

Desired clinical experience: 

1. Currently working with elite sport athletes 
2. Medical Officer currently working within the HCSI network or directly with an NGB 
3. Previous experience in primary care aspects of SEM (preferably General Practice Vocational Training / Primary Care trained or completed specialist training in SEM) 
4. At least 3 years clinical sporting experience at an elite level 
5. Completed specialist training in SEM 
6. Previous work with BOA in multi-sport Games environment 
7. An understanding of the BOA standard operating procedures during Games time 
8. Previous multi-sport Games experience

The expression of interest will be open from Friday 30th March 2018 - Sunday 22nd April 2018 (midnight) 
Interviews are to be held at the BOA offices on Tuesday 8th & Wednesday 9th May 2018 

Candidates must ensure they are available to meet the requirements of fulfilling the allocated job role, including all necessary dates in the build up to the YOG.

  • Transparency with employees over the time commitment for the role is essential. 
  • HCSI employees that are core funded will be “released” to undertake their duties on HCSI time, on the proviso that your HCSI duties can be covered in their absence. 
  • For those who are not full-time employees, it is their own responsibility to account for their non-EIS time. 
  • When applying please state clearly your HCSI TFE status and whether your role is core funded or NGB funded. 
  • External candidates (non-HCSI) are invited to apply on an equal basis, and each application will be considered on a case-by-case basis. 
  • All posts are on a volunteer basis and as such are not subject to remuneration by Team GB.
