Help to deliver a world-first, the first-ever combined European Championships. Glasgow 2018, the biggest sporting event to come to Glasgow and Scotland since the best ever Commonwealth Games, is looking for people to undertake a number of roles.


Glasgow 2018 will make its world sporting calendar debut from 2 to 12 August, bringing together six sports, over 11 days, into one incredible event.


Glasgow 2018 are looking to appoint Event Safety Officers (ESO) from 2nd July to 13th August 2018, to ensure the venues and events are delivered safely and securely. The ESO may be on site during the sites build and de-rig as well as being the Event Safety Officer during the operational period of the event. The ESO will be the competent and responsible health and safety expert for the site. The ESO will be allocated with one or more sites which they will manage for the period of the Championships.  Plans, policies and procedures will be developed and the ESO will ensure these are followed on site as well as managing any new hazards or risks. This role will require the ESO to work closely with Event Management Teams and Multi-Agency Partners and may include weekend working. 


Duties & Responsibilities:


            The Event Safety Officer will be required to perform the following duties:

  • Oversee the management of safety at designated Glasgow 2018 European Championships events/venues and as such be present on-site throughout the event build, the event itself and the de-rig of the event working closely with the Site/ Overlay Manager. 
  • Be solutions orientated to any challenges that may present themselves during planning and delivery phases.
  • Be responsible for writing and/or amending documents including but not limited to Event Risk Assessments, Spectator Safety and Welfare Plans, Emergency Response and Evacuation Plans, Wind and Weather Management Plans, Contingency plans, Fire Safety Management Plans, Fire Risk Assessment and Stewarding Plans.
  • Liaise with contractors ensuring their risk assessments and method statements are suitable and sufficient and monitoring compliance with these during site builds and de-rig.
  • Ensure Glasgow City Council and Glasgow 2018 Health and Safety Policies and procedures are adhered to both during planning and delivery phases.
  • Provide professional Health and Safety advice and guidance to all Functional Areas.
  • Undertake Health and Safety accident and incident investigations.
  • Ensure all conditions within the Temporary Public Entertainment Licenses are met.

 Skills and previous experience

Candidates must hold a Spectator Safety Management Qualification to NVQ Level 4. It would be advantageous and desirable to be working toward and / or hold a NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent. The candidates must have knowledge of current health and safety legislation and experience of its practical application in both in a large multi-disciplinary organisation and at major events.

In-depth knowledge and practical experience of working to the guidelines detailed within The Purple Guide to Health, Safety and Welfare at Music and Other Events and the Green Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds.
