|Location||Hong Kong, Asia|
|Sector||Leisure & Health, Science & Medicine|
|Function||Medicine & Science, Clinical Services|
|Salary||Please send your expected salary to The Hong Kong Jockey Club|
The Department of Veterinary Clinical Service currently provides clinical care to all horses in Hong Kong, including approximately 1200 Thoroughbreds in race training at Sha Tin Racecourse. From July this year horses within the Hong Kong Jockey Club will also be stabled at a dedicated Thoroughbred training centre that the Club is building near Conghua in Guangdong Province, South China. The centre will be equipped with state-of-the-art racehorse training facilities and will accommodate 1,400 horses when full. Horses will shuttle down to Hong Kong to race and “show-case” race meetings will be held in Conghua from early 2019 onwards.
Both the Sha Tin and Conghua Training Centres will include world-class equine hospitals with dedicated teams of support staff. The Department will operate seamlessly over both sites with the majority of vets based in Hong Kong and rotating periodically to Conghua on a roster.
We are looking for two junior clinicians to join our team of existing professional staff. You will be based at the Equine Hospital in Sha Tin and rotate up to Conghua on a regular basis. You will work closely with senior colleagues in both centres and there will be opportunities to gain experience and develop practical skills in busy, high-quality racing environments. You will be encouraged to contribute to ongoing and future departmental research projects. Accommodation will be provided at both centres.
The Intern in Racehorse Clinical Practice is primarily responsible for:
- Providing assistance to senior colleagues
- In the administration of daily treatments during routine stable rounds
- In the performance of diagnostic procedures
- During race day operations
- Supporting general veterinary-related services such as accompanying convoys transporting horses between Hong Kong and Conghua and contributing to clinical cover for riding schools when required
- Performing general anaesthesia and assisting with elective and emergency surgery
Ideally, you should:
- Hold a degree recognized by the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Hong Kong
- Have experience in equine practice and be able to demonstrate competence in core clinical skills
- Be enthusiastic and motivated to learn
- Have good communication and interpersonal skills
