Internal Communications Specialist – Job Description

Strategic capabilities

  • The Internal Communications Specialist leads the strategic direction of the internal communications team;
  • Fully integrated with the wider communications and human resources teams, he/she will maintain in-depth knowledge of the local and global issues that affect the organisation and its staff and is responsible for maintaining a 12-month plus view of departmental priorities and challenges;.

Planning capabilities

  • The Internal Communications Specialist will be responsible for developing comprehensive internal communications plans with a 12-month plus horizon that are aligned with wider communications activity and organisational objectives;
  • These will include detailed content plans covering all available platforms, campaign planning around wider communications/organisational milestones, and employee engagement planning and execution;

Advising & crisis

  • The Internal Communications Specialist will act as a trusted adviser to the Communications Director on all aspects of internal communications, particularly staff morale and actions being taken by the internal communications team to maintain/improve staff morale;
  • The successful candidate will also play a pivotal role in crisis communications, ensuring internal stakeholders are informed and involved as necessary;

Developing & maintaining effective relationships

  • The Internal Communications Specialist will build strong relationships with leaders of other departments and will have the ability to gain a deep understanding of the organisation’s culture, vision and direction;
  • He/she will build departmental/team leaders’ internal communications abilities and will develop tools and resources to enable team leaders across the organisation to communicate effectively with their teams, particularly around moments of important organisational change;

Tactical delivery

  • The Internal Communications Specialist will lead tactical execution of all internal communications, managing the activities of the internal communications team with full responsibility for quality of content;
  • This will include development and appraisal of new and existing communications channels, such as newsletters, email announcements, publications, intranet updates and videos;
  • The Internal Communications Specialist will be responsible for managing intranet systems, particularly SharePoint;

Supporting human resources

  • Although the focus of communications will be the general employee population and senior management, the Internal Communications Specialist will also develop clear messaging for the HR team in line with existing messaging to provide clarity and focus for strategic HR initiatives;
  • This will include working with the HR team to develop impactful personnel development programmes and promotion campaigns that resonate with staff;


  • 5+ years’ experience in a communications role and in Internal corporate communications;
  • Knowledge of intranet systems, particularly SharePoint, is a strong advantage;
  • A BA in journalism, communications, public relations or marketing is an advantage, though other degrees are acceptable;
  • A professional qualification from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations or the Chartered Institute of Marketing, or an MA qualification, is an advantage;
  • Relevant experience with a sports-oriented and/or prominent Qatari organisation is an advantage;

Key skills

  • Planning skills - The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of planning communications campaigns and day-to-day communications activities;
  • Writing skills - The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills as well as the journalistic ability to source stories from employees. Bi-lingual writing ability in Arabic and English is a distinct advantage;
  • Speaking skills - The successful candidate will demonstrate strong speaking and presenting skills. Bi-lingual speaking ability in Arabic and English is a distinct advantage;
  • Interpersonal skills - The successful candidate will demonstrate good interpersonal and relationship-building skills in order to work well with other team members in the Communications and HR departments and with senior management;
  • Creative skills - The successful candidate will demonstrate the creative ability to devise internal communications strategies and develop engaging digital content.
