Job Purpose

The R&A (the governing body for golf and organiser of The Open Championship) is seeking to fill an exciting permanent post in the Championship Department. Based in St Andrews and reporting to the Director – Championship Operations, this key role will embrace a wide range of duties in organising The Open – The World’s pre-eminent golf event.

Job Description


Core responsibilities will be but not limited to:

  • Liaise with a large number and variety of contractors to agree scope of works, budgets, schedules and logistic operations surrounding the management of The Open
  • Managing supplier relationships
  • Responsible for specific project budgets
  • Assist with designing the internal and external layouts of infrastructure at The Open
  • Spend time on site at future Open venues designing the overall layout of infrastructure liaising closely with each host club and local authority
  • Work closely with the construction management team and Health & Safety consultants to ensure best practice in the delivery of The Open
  • Prepare maps, plans and technical drawings to assist the planning process
  • Use GPS mapping software to design record and locate key infrastructure coordinates to assist with the build of The Open
  • Assist with creating a number of print collateral items to be distributed to the public on site at The Open including Course Maps and Path-to-Purchase leaflets
  • Work closely with The Open catering partners in the planning and live phases of The Open ensuring new products and ideas are continually introduced and oversee the successful delivery of such operations
  • Assist with the delivery of the overall branding and event look on site at The Open ensuring strict following of brand guidelines
  • Deliver multiple experiential activations at The Open on behalf of The R&A and their key stakeholders
  • Prepare procurement documents such as ITT’s and draw up supplier agreement and contracts.
  • Liaise with other key business units within The R&A to ensure coordinated messaging and delivery of The Open brand strategy


  • A degree level qualification in a relevant subject
  • Strong project management experience (at least three years) with the ability to adapt to changing environments
  • Previous experience working on large scale events
  • Experience of working within teams and independently
  • Proven budget management experience
  • Excellent communications and leadership skills
  • Strong IT proficiency

  • Flexibility to work from championship locations, throughout the UK and overseas, when required
  • A passion for golf and a good working knowledge of the sport preferable
