This position applies equally to both Sussex Cricket Limited and the wholly owned subsidiary, the Sussex Cricket Foundation, hereafter jointly referred to as the Organisation.

Job Purpose:

  • Accountable for ensuring that the Organisation’s strategy is successfully delivered, ensuring that all strategic and operational objectives are met across the Organisation.
  • Accountable for ensuring that the Organisation operates within all the relevant legal frameworks.


  • Review and deliver the vision, mission and strategic objectives for the Organisation;
  • Work with key stakeholders, including the Managing Director of the SCF, to deliver the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) agreed vision, objectives and outcomes for non-professional cricket.

Business Plan:

  • Develop and implement a business plan across the Organisation, consistent with both the objectives of the Organisation and the ECB (i.e. incorporating both local and national strategies);
  • In conjunction with the Head of Finance and Honorary Treasurer, set, manage and present the annual budgets to the Board;
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of key performance indicators for the business;
  • Implement commercial plans that maximise match-day and non-match day revenue and profitability;
  • Ensure all aspects of the Organisation are effectively marketed to maximise media coverage and are recognised in the local community and throughout the cricketing world;
  • Maximise the benefits of performance-related fee payments;
  • Report to the Board on business performance and key issues.


Finance and Business Compliance

  • Work with the Head of Finance and the Honorary Treasurer to ensure the Organisation complies with all laws, regulatory standards, guidelines and best practices with regard to its business and governance;
  • Regularly review the management and governance of the Organisation and recommend to the respective Chairperson and Board any appropriate changes to improve performance and effectiveness.

Human Resources

  • Work with the Head of HR to ensure the effective development and management of all staff;
  • Ensure that the Organisation operates its HR policies and procedures within current employment legislation and best practice.

Health & Safety

  • Ensure that the Organisation fully complies with Health and Safety legislation and implements best practice with regards to the management of Health and Safety at work.

Relationships and Reputation

  • Develop effective working relationships and partnerships with the Organisation’s key stakeholders at local, national and international levels;
  • Provide timely and effective management of escalating issues;
  • Participate in and manage communications at a senior level;
  • Represent the Organisation at internal and external events.

Management & Leadership

  • Provide effective and authentic leadership and management to all staff through the Leadership Team, ensuring all strategic and operational objectives are met;
  • Manage all aspects of the contractual arrangements for professional players in conjunction with the Director of Cricket.

Person Specification - Essential Criteria

  • Qualifications
    • Professional management or business qualification desirable
    • Educated to degree-level desirable
  • Professional Experience
    • Proven success in a senior strategic leadership role (minimum two years)
    • Successful track record of leading major change initiatives in a commercial context
    • Evidence of developing and leading business strategy
    • Proven track record of leading an organisation to improve its financial, commercial and operational performance
    • Working at a strategic level within a professional sports organisation desirable
  • Skills & Knowledge
    • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities associated with the role of Chief Executive and the wider Organisation
    • Skills to analyse and disseminate complex information and understand the commercial impact
    • Strong commercial background
    • Evidence of strong financial background
    • Competent computer skills – ability to produce reports in a professional and effective manner
    • Thorough understanding of the challenges facing professional cricket
