British Weight Lifting

As the UK's recognised Governing Body for weight lifting, our role is to inspire a nation of weight lifters through exceptional leadership and expertise.

We are responsible for the growth and success of weight lifting at every level. Our work sees us support a network of weight lifting bodies, clubs and gyms across the UK, as well as the thousands of people actively involved in Olympic and Paralympic weight lifting disciplines. We strive to deliver exceptional training programmes, educational structures and competitions that create opportunities for individuals to participate and excel in our sport. Whether you’re an aspiring weightlifter or para-powerlifter at your local club or an elite athlete competing on the international stage, we are here to help you fulfil your potential.

More about us

We strive to deliver exceptional training programmes, educational structures and competitions that create opportunities for people to participate and excel in our sport. Whether you’re an aspiring weightlifter at your local club or an elite athlete competing on the international stage, we are here to help you fulfil your potential.

We have recently had our most successful Commonwealth Games (Gold Coast in 2018) in 20 years for both weightlifting and para-powerlifting. Out of our 18 English athletes who took part, 9 medals were won – one Gold, four Silver and four Bronze – with six for weightlifting and three for para-powerlifting. Another two medals were won for Wales. This was a great improvement on Glasgow where five medals were won in total.

Culture

Our mission
Our mission is to revolutionise the way our nation engages in weightlifting, para-powerlifting, weight bearing and training activities by creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate. We believe that we can play an important role in making weightlifting a part of everyday, and a means to tackle national inactivity. In doing so, we believe we can help create a healthier, happier and stronger nation.

Our 2017-2021 strategy outlines how we aim to achieve these goals.

Our objectives are to:
- Increase national activity in weightlifting, bearing and training activities
- Promote inclusivity and diversity to create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to easily get involved in the sport
- Become global leader in weightlifting - on and off the platform
- Maximise investment, partnerships and good governance to drive the growth of the sport.

We plan to achieve our strategy through:
- Improved promotion of opportunities and inspiration to lift
- Targeted provision of programmes and events
- A skilled and committed weight lifting and weight training workforce
- Improved and more inclusive places to lift
- Invest our resources in the most effective and efficient way
- Understand our place in the market and be the best we can at that

As part of our four-year strategy, we aim to:
- Increase the number of lifters that BWL qualified coaches 'influence' each week from 60,000 to 75,000 (that is one coach influencing on average 20 lifters a week and each lifter lifting at least once a week).
- Increase the diversity of people regularly participating by attracting more members from lower socio-economic groups (levels 1 to 4 on the IMD index) to 38%.
- Maintain the gender split in English lifters at BWL competitions at a 55%/45% split (either way).
- Improve the overall competition structure by providing high quality sustainable opportunities and expand our reach and influence by developing new and inspiring events.

BWL are passionate about and committed to working to our set of values:
