Glasgow is a global leader in Sport. Ranked fifth in the 2016 SportBusiness Ultimate Sport City Awards and number one with regard to the size of our population, the city continues to attract the very best athletes and events following the success of what was dubbed the ‘best ever’ Commonwealth Games in 2014. That success has helped to inspire our citizens to get more fit and active across Scotland’s largest health and fitness network. With 22 gyms and 12 swimming pools, last year there were 6.7 million attendances at Glasgow Club facilities including iconic venues such as the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

In the last 20 years, we’ve invested £300 million in our sports facilities and since 2009 we’ve doubled the membership of the Glasgow Club to 42,000, and our young people are getting more fit and active, with 21,000 members of junior sports clubs, a rise of almost 400% since 2009. We want to do more by ensuring everyone in our city becomes more active throughout their lives.

We are looking to appoint a Director of Sport to further develop our sport offer on a domestic and global stage. As Director of Sport, you will be an inspirational leader, business orientated and passionate about increasing participation and delivering on our incredible range of major sporting events, including the TOTAL BWF Badminton World Championships in 2017, the inaugural European Championships in 2018 in partnership with Berlin and the 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships.

You will be a strategic leader, with a full understanding of public sector sports provision, and a strong commercial understanding. A key challenge will be delivering on a 5 year plan to grow income through a significant expansion in Glasgow Club Health and Fitness and Junior membership from refresh/redesign of facilities, services and programmes. This will be alongside supporting the most inactive in our communities to become more engaged and continuing our cost base reduction strategies.

You will inspire, challenge, innovate and be ambitious for the people we serve. You will also have excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills, able to engage with key partners in the public and private sectors, as well as sports governing bodies at a local, National and international level.

Glasgow has enjoyed significant success in recent years, with sport and culture, transforming the city’s reputation and providing moments which have engendered real pride in our citizens. The Director of Sport will be a critical part of Glasgow Life’s Leadership Team and on delivering our shared ambition to get more people involved in and inspired by sport and physical activity – and we are looking for an exceptional candidate to join the team.
