Full Job Description

Gymnastics Australia (GA) is the peak body for gymnastics in Australia with a vision to enrich lives through Gymnastics. The GA Strategic Plan 2017-2020 and ‘Australia’s Winning Edge’ (AWE) are key drivers of GA’s High Performance (HP) Program.

The HP Program provides targeted support for developing elite athletes, coaches and programs in the Olympic Gymsports of Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG and WAG respectively), Rhythmic Gymnastics and Trampoline Gymnastics. The primary goal of the HP Program is to achieve medals at benchmark events including the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Olympic Games.

The cornerstones of GA’s National Program are the National Centres of Excellence (NCE) in Melbourne and Perth for WAG and the NCE in Canberra for MAG.

Gymnastics in Australia is about to embark on a period of unprecedented change! A number of High Performance and Coaching positions have become available with a primary focus of podium success at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Olympic Games.

Reporting to the National Performance Director (NPD), the WAG National Coach (NC) will work closely and collaboratively with GA’s WAG NCE Head Coaches and other key technical personnel across Australia to develop and implement a clear strategic direction for WAG in Australia that will result in Australia’s sustained success internationally.

The NC will challenge and support coaches across the system to recognise their individual and collective strengths, and learning opportunities which results in world-class support for Australia’s best female athletes. Through both words and actions the NC will live GA’s values, and will inspire and hold others accountable for doing the same. The NC will drive the selection and preparation of WAG National Teams and will be responsible for working with coaches to create a positive, performance focused environment around athletes both in camps and at competitions.

To be considered for this role you will have extensive WAG coaching experience at the international level including World Championships and Olympic Games.  You will have proven success in building a high performance culture, leading coaches, athletes and support personnel with the inspiration and drive to achieve. Experience with one-to-one peer level mentoring of coaches is required, along with a clear understanding of contemporary and best practice high performance coaching methodologies, the requirements of successful coaches and athlete development pathways within the sport of gymnastics.

In addition to world-class technical expertise, we will be looking for individuals with highly-refined planning, organisational, communication (including fluent English) and interpersonal skills to join the collaborative ‘one team’ culture at GA and allow effective working relationships with performance staff, athletes, parents, and stakeholders. In addition to performance excellence, GA values teamwork, integrity and respect and the WAG National Coach will share these values and lead by example.

This role presents a unique opportunity to lead the development of Australia’s best female athletes in world-class daily performance environments to achieve on the world stage.

This position will be a 2+2 contract role through to December 2020. The contract may be reviewed following the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Gymnastics Australia office is located in Albert Park, Melbourne. This position will ideally be based in Canberra, to be negotiated with the successful candidate. Candidates are invited to indicate their preferred location(s) in their applications.

The successful candidates would ideally commence duties in mid-January, 2017, mindful of notice periods and general availability.
